Introduction: Out Of The Box Education, an EdTech startup founded out of MIT, is on a mission to create meaningful learning experiences for children around the world. The aim of the project was to develop a modular children’s 'classroom-in-a-box' furniture that transforms any available space into a learning environment through different sets of learning activities. The project involved the full product development process - from idea to manufacturable product. The goal was to define a product that was ergonomically considered, modular and flexible in the ways it could be used. The outcome was a product that exceeded its Kickstarter funding goals within 5 minutes of launch. The design managed to reduce inventory, enhance usability and increase durability of the unit leading to an overall better product. Outcomes: Highly successful Kickstarter campaign achieving over 1000% of its funding goal. Fast Company Innovation by Design 2022 Finalist. Featured in TIME 'The Best Inventions Of 2022'. Developed from idea to manufactured product. Furniture with many different modes and configurations of learning and play. Reduced inventory and created easy-to-assemble parts. Designed for modularity through different learning activity sets and height adjustability as the child grows. Presentations to show investors, potential consumers, educators and others involved. Provided support throughout the manufacturing process. Packaging and instruction manuals developed to enhance overall user experience.
Introduction: Feastables, a chocolate and snack brand by the world-famous Youtuber Mr. Beast, aimed to improve upon their previous chocolate bar mould design. The goal was to explore new design approaches that maintain weight & dimensional constraints whilst enhancing brand appeal, increasing the bar's durability and elevating the overall customer experience. The project involved exploring over 20 various conceptual design approaches leading to a final simplistic yet effective solution that allows them to stand out amongst competitor chocolate bars on the market. Outcomes: Chocolate bar launched successfully and received positive feedback. Achieved weight/volume constraints without appearing significantly smaller. Simplified the moulding process. Increased the rigidity of the chocolate bar to avoid accidental breakage. Addition of distinct cut lines to guide the snapping of the bar. Application of Mr. Beast and Feastables branding on the bar. Implemented a unique yet low-profile form that aims to still be easily recognised.
Introduction: If our products last twice as long, we will consume half as many. A studio project, originally inspired by traditional Japanese ramen bars is now re-invented to embody a modular, repairable and upgradable approach. The aim of this project was to explore how design can add value via repairable products. Increased consumer awareness around waste, recycling and environmental impact inspired us to think about alternatives. This project showcases a solution that may build a foundation for customers who could potentially buy replacement parts or customise an everyday tool. Outcomes: A repairable product idea that aims to inspire buyers to 'make it their own' and to consider the item's end-of-life. Designed with usability and ergonomics in mind. Design of an unboxing experience. A subtle form, differentiated from similar products by removing the organic shapes and over-moulded rubber grips. Reduces waste and aims to be as eco-friendly as possible whilst trying to challenge consumer mindsets. * Registered Design (2022).
Introduction: Treo.Ai aimed to provide local sports teams with an opportunity to capture and analyse video footage of every game similar to elite-level clubs. Their goal was to provide an affordable panoramic video recording product/system (commonly used in football) for young athletes. The aim of the project was to develop the casing/body of the camera to house the built-in AI that creates panoramic sports footage. The product needed to deliver commercial appeal, durability and water resistance whilst being designed for a production process that compliments the low number of units required. Outcomes: Developed from idea to fully functioning physical product. Designed with usability and ergonomics in mind. Built-in modularity with the option to switch between two different internal cameras. Multiple detailed prototypes were created for testing. Presentations to show investors, potential consumers and others involved. Created to conform with additive manufacturing guidelines.
Introduction: As part of the development of a children's modular furniture project, custom packaging was developed with a focus on interactive play and sustainability. The aim was to ensure the packaging could be interactively repurposed rather than discarded. In line with the educational purpose of the hardware, the packaging was also designed to feature various activities and playful graphical elements that encourage children to unleash their creativity. Further consideration was given to the unboxing experience, ensuring a smooth and intuitive transition from opening the package to assembling the product. Outcomes: Giving the packaging a second life instead of being discarded. Launched successfully as part of a Kickstarter and received positive customer feedback. Harmoniously designed and styled with the hardware inside. Enhanced children's & parent's unboxing of the product. Developed internal layout/nesting of parts and graphical design elements. Created an instruction manual that seamlessly guides from unboxing to full assembly. Designed to be as small as possible to reduce costs, improve distribution and make manual handling easier.
The goal was to design a chest rig specifically tailored for professionals in the film industry. The focus was to create versatile and all encompassing tactical vest that supports filmmakers throughout their film making process. Enhanced functionality and comfort was required. The project aim was to establish a design that was ergonomic, technically advanced and commercially appealing. Compartmentalisation of tools was a big aspect of the project. Prototyping was required to ensure all areas of the chest rig was accessible whilst avoiding discomfort. Outcomes: Designed with usability and ergonomics in mind. Multiple rounds of physical mock-ups made to establish size, fit and accessibility. Established materials, a brand visual look & feel and dimensions. Technical pack developed for initial sample making. Created to conform with soft goods production processes.
Introduction: Hexnub's core mission of delivering high quality coffee accessories for popular products ignited an expansion of their product line. The aim was to design and develop a pot stand capable of supporting weight and high temperature from stovetop expresso makers. The bamboo stand utilises a cork placemat and a storage space that houses a moulded bamboo fibre tray. This is a step towards being as sustainable as possible by using renewable materials. Aesthetically, the stand boasts a soft, rounded, minimal and symmetrical form suitable for any home environment. Outcomes: Product manufactured and available to purchase. Designed to minimise cost of shipping and packaging by reducing weight and size. In line with manufacturing constraints. Footprint accommodates any size expresso stovetop pot. A subtle and unobtrusive form to harmonise with any kitchen style. Product made from eco-friendly materials. Visualisation of the full product line in life-like materials and textures with props for context to aid e-commerce website and online shop.
Introduction: An elegant and manual bio-plastic toothbrush with a replaceable head. This challenge required an attachment that must be durable and robust to ensure little to no movement when in use. The aim was to form the design through research, utilising replaceable heads and a uniquely modern aesthetic whilst keeping the tooling costs as low as possible. Styling, design engineering and prototyping was required to bring the physical product to life. Outcomes: A fully functional product manufacturable by bio-plastic injection moulding. Prototyped to perfect tolerances - easy enough to snap together and hard enough to avoid accidental disassembly. Designed to avoid any extra tooling and in line with production constraints. Ergonomically designed for comfort. A subtle form, differentiated from similar products by removing the organic shapes and over-moulded rubber grips. Reduces waste and aims to be as eco-friendly as possible at end of life.
