This project involved migrating from an on-premise setup with Docker Swarm to the Google Cloud Platform with Kubernetes. The highlight was the database migration - custom plugins prevented the use of CloudSQL, so we had to set up a PostgreSQL cluster using cloud VMs and manage it with the Managed Instance Group and Patroni tool. For the project, we architected and implemented a complete system. This involved implementing the infrastructure on the Google Cloud Platform with an "Infrastructure as Code" approach and DevOps principles and creating a front-end using Python and the Django framework. Our goal was to create a scalable, automated, and manageable system that leverages the full potential of Google Cloud. We built a Django app and deployed it on the Google App Engine. We took advantage of its low cost due to automatic scaling and high availability across three zones in the Warsaw GCP region. For other applications, we deployed them on Kubernetes (GKE) with Helm Charts for packaging. We used Cloud Run for quick scaling during peak moments. We used Terraform for infrastructure provisioning and CloudSQL for databases. We implemented CI/CD pipelines for all applications to ensure agile development.
